Faeez leads Negri to team title

FAEEZ Said (pix) led Negri Sembilan to victory in the Malaysia Games men's team tennis final by thrashing Federal Territories 2-0 at the National Tennis Centre on Saturday
The 17-year-old was in near perfect form as he hammered Sean Yip 6-3, 6-0 before compatriot Khoo Er Yang thrashed Wan Abdul Muiz 6-0, 6-2 to give Negri an unassailable 2-0 lead.
The Sabah-born Faeez said he was delighted to help his adopted state win the title.
"Sean played brilliantly but I managed to contain him throughout the match. Overall, I am happy to play an instrumental role in Negri's victory today (yesterday)," said Faeez, who represented Sabah in last year's Malaysia Games edition in Pahang.
"It is my first ever Malaysia Games medal but I hope to add another in the men's doubles together with Syed Ariffin Syed Naguib."
In the semi-finals, Negri edged Selangor 2-1 while Kuala Lumpur defeated Terengganu 3-0.
In the women's team event, Selangor and Pahang eased into the final by recording their second straight victory in their respective groups yesterday.
Selangor, the defending champions, are expected to retain their title today.
But coach S. Selvarajoo is expected to re-shuffle his team against Pahang.
"I may opt to drop one or two players, who have been rather erratic in the group stage, for the final. Pahang have several players with talent. We need to be careful," said Selvarajoo.
Pahang are led by Selangor-born Delizavernne Kaur, the younger sister of top junior players Pearljit Singh and Duzbionjit Singh.
Delizavernne opted to play for Pahang as she was not considered to represent Selangor.
