India thrash Malaysia

The Indian girls outclassed Malaysia in a match for minor placings in the Junior Fed Cup under-16 tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Friday.

After winning both singles matches easily, the Indian girls conserved their energy for the battles ahead by giving a walkover in the doubles.

India will now meet Uzbekistan to stay in the race for the ninth spot after failing to qualify for the quarterfinals following defeats against Australia and Thailand in the league phase. Incidentally, Australia and Thailand qualified for the semifinals and booked their berths for the World Group competition to be staged later in the season. They were joined by Japan and Chinese Taipei.

The results (placings match): India bt Malaysia 2-1 (Jasmine Kaur Bajaj bt Jia Wei Ti 6-0, 6-1; Tahira Bhatti bt Lyn Yuen Choo 6-2, 6-4; Jasmine Kaur Bajaj & Snehadevi Reddy gave walkover to Lyn Yuen Choo & Jia Wei Ti).

Quarterfinals: Japan bt Korea 2-1; Thailand bt New Zealand 2-1; Chinese Taipei bt Indonesia 2-1; Australia bt Kazakhstan 3-0. - source: www.thehindu.com
